Digital technologies are increasingly converging with the delivery of health care, including diagnostics, medical devices, and drugs. These advances are resulting in repurposing and broader adoption of existing technologies, as well as innovation leading to new technologies. The COVID-19 pandemic increased the speed and adoption of innovations by creating a greater appreciation of how technology can dramatically improve patient outcomes. Two key examples are mRNA vaccines and monoclonal antibodies used against COVID-19.

Prior to COVID-19, virtual care was largely unknown by both clinicians and consumers. A pandemic alongside changes in reimbursement flung the doors wide open to virtual delivery of health care, helping advance technologies around remote patient monitoring such as laboratory testing and electrocardiograms. Adding community-based radiology and laboratory facilities further expanded how efficiently patients received needed care.
