Forty-seven individuals representing 11 academic institutions, 9 clinical agencies, and 5 professional organizations met to draft standards for educational programs preparing acute care nurse practitioners. The outcomes of this first consensus conference include statements about philosophy, title, and core curriculum. The purpose is to provide guidance to those developing similar programs and to provide a starting point for the profession to prepare a certification mechanism for acute care nurse practitioners
