As the number of elderly increase, new challenges for the management of their health care arise: Elders who become critically ill are one of the most complex subsets of this population. Their special needs, risk factors, and diminished resources create a demand for comprehensive and creative approaches to care management. The purpose of this article is to explore the needs of the critically ill elderly and the role of nursing case management in meeting these needs.
