Bloodstream infections are the most frequently reported type of infection in pediatric intensive care units (PICUs) and can represent significant morbidity and mortality in this population.1 There are few reported studies focusing on central venous catheter (CVC) care in PICU patients and there are still unresolved issues in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines for prevention of catheter-related bloodstream infection (CRBSI) in children.2 Practice guidelines specific to pediatrics and prevention of CRBSI have been informed by the adult literature.
