There are currently more than 107 807 patients waiting for transplants listed on the United Network for Organ Sharing Web site. Data from January to April 2010 show that 4635 donors have been recovered during that 4-month period. We know that the list of those waiting for organs will continue to grow. We also know that when nurses have a higher comfort level in meeting families’ informational and emotional support needs, the rate of donation goes up.

  • Develop an educational plan for your unit to increase the comfort level of all nurses in discussing end-of-life issues with families.

  • Include opportunities for role playing and provide feedback on performance.

  • Invite a representative from your local organ procurement organization to present an in-service for your unit or chapter.
