For patients with severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), recent evidence suggests initiation of early continuous infusion neuromuscular blocking agents (NMBAs) improves patient oxygenation, and reduces inflammation and mortality. Despite the possible benefits of NMBAs for ARDS, prolonged use may contribute to increased risk for corneal ulcers, skin breakdown, venous thromboembolism, ventilator-associated pneumonia, and musculoskeletal debility.
