The evidence synthesis1 acknowledged that the prevailing culture within the nursing profession may limit acceptability of nighttime naps, as fatigue has been seen as “part of our culture.” Thus, napping may not be compatible with existing values in many health care organizations. Despite this, we can push a shift in this culture by championing the evidence to bring voice to the benefits or relative advantage that napping can offer nurses and ultimately the patients we serve. Such conversations may serve as the tipping point, influencing organizations to reshape priorities and develop fatigue management policies. For instance, some facilities have modified policies to indicate that sleeping is no longer prohibited in the workplace; rather, staff may sleep during an established 15-minute break or a 30-minute lunch break.
