The Choosing Wisely campaign was established in 2012 to educate and encourage health professionals to provide high-value care by reducing unnecessary testing and procedures. Four major professional and scientific societies, including the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses and the Society of Critical Care Medicine, support the campaign’s 5 specific recommendations.
Wiencek and colleagues surveyed nurses working in acute and intensive care settings in the United States to assess their awareness and use of the campaign. They found
More advanced practice nurses (64%) than registered nurses (36%) were aware of the campaign.
Many staff and advanced practice nurses (72%) reported clinical care implementation of the campaign recommendations.
Three themes were identified regarding implementation:
Addressing staff resistance
Providing ongoing education
Changing the intensive care unit’s culture
