Each person on this planet is a unique individual. This fact can get lost in our current health care system, which is driving toward standardization of care. However, nurses have long understood how unique each individual patient is and that respect for that uniqueness is critical to providing optimal patient care. In particular, understanding how unique each person is becomes vital to understanding the importance of individualizing care at the end of life. With that said, standardization can play an important role in improving end-of-life care.
