I read with great interest the article, “Assessing Tissue Oxygenation,” in the June 2002 issue (June 2002:22–40). This article provided an excellent review of acid-base physiology and arterial blood gas interpretation.
I would love to see a follow-up article that addresses the critical physiological concepts that form the interface of clinical shock states and dysregulation of gas and nutrient exchange at the tissue level. A review of the utilization of additional technologies such as mixed venous oxygen saturation monitoring, serum lactate assays, and therapeutic modalities to correct hypoperfusion would be most helpful.
