Our unit is a 50-bed cardiac intensive care unit/telemetry unit, split between 2 floors. We have more than 100 staff members. How do you disseminate information to such a large staff successfully? Via e-mail? What about those who don’t read their e-mail? Staff meetings? What about those who don’t attend staff meetings? How do you deal with an “I don’t know” or “Nobody told me” mentality? Our core measures were not doing well, and our quality outcomes were not so great either. There was also a sense of nonownership on the unit: “I didn’t know about that, so why should I do it?”

With the foresight of our unit manager and operations manager, we implemented the “Cardiac Huddle.” Attending the Huddle was a requirement of every staff member coming on duty. It was held twice a day at 7 AM or 7 PM and it would take about 5 minutes...
