The Joint Commission has published a monograph, titled Measuring Hand Hygiene Adherence: Overcoming the Challenges, to help health care organizations target their efforts in measuring hygiene performance. This monograph is the result of a 2-year collaboration with major infection control organizations in the United States and abroad; it systematically reviews the strengths and weaknesses of commonly used approaches to measure compliance with hand hygiene and provides examples of measurement methods and tools as well as references to evidence-based guidelines and published literature.
