I applaud Critical Care Nurse for recognizing simulation as a best practice in critical care leadership. As a clinical nurse educator, it is refreshing to see that CCN is supporting the advancement of nursing knowledge and science through the use of simulation. The article by Radovich et al (October 2011:58–63) demonstrates that simulation is an effective orientation and teaching tool for novice nurse leaders.

The authors consider a novel approach to simulation by focusing on the role of the novice nurse leader. Traditionally, the simulation experience has focused on the actions and communication skills used in complex medical and surgical situations and primarily on the role of the bedside clinician. The leadership role in today’s health care system can present a multitude of challenges for a new, inexperienced leader.
