The AACN Standards for Establishing and Sustaining a Healthy Work Environment outline 6 standards that contribute to an environment of excellence and safety. Chief among these standards is skilled communication, and civility is an important aspect of skilled communication. According to the authors of The Real Healthcare Reform, “an epidemic of incivility” exists in many health care workplaces today. Bullying and disruptive behaviors are pervasive in many units, teams, and organizations. This constant incivility can lead to an erosion of trust in the team and feelings of hopelessness, exhaustion, and dissatisfaction—an unhealthy work environment. This book walks the reader through the journey of self-awareness and change that can lead to improved professional relationships and a healthier work environment. It is an easy-to-read book that can have a lasting impact on the individual nurse and the health care environment.
