At NTI 2010 in Washington, DC, during President Beth Hammer’s keynote address, the story of a remarkable family and the nurses who cared for them was shared with the 7000 nurses in attendance. By the time the story was finished, the large convention hall was filled with emotion. This book is the personal account of the family through the birth of their premature son; the mother’s pulmonary embolus, arrest, and therapeutic hypothermia; and their recovery. Mary Kay Bader, a neuro critical care clinical nurse specialist, offers the nurse’s perspective of the experience. This story demonstrates how the power of this family’s faith and trust in the health care community supported them as they journeyed down the difficult and treacherous road to survival.
