In the Certification Test Prep department in the April issue (Crit Care Nurse. 2013:81–84), the rationale for question 4 on page 83 contained errors. Stress ulcer prophylaxis does not prevent ventilator-associated pneumonia. In fact, some studies suggest that use of gastrointestinal prophylaxis may contribute to ventilator-associated pneumonia should the gastric juices be aspirated.
The intent of the Certification Test Prep series is to familiarize future candidates with the style of the certification test questions. Items selected for the certification exams undergo a comprehensive multicommittee process of review, validation, and pretesting to ensure accuracy.
