The Institute of Medicine’s report The Future of Nursing includes recommendations such as residency programs to bridge the reality gap between nursing school and the clinical environment after graduation. The information provided in The Nurse’s Reality Gap is the result of a survey of approximately 100 associate, baccalaureate, and master’s degree nursing graduates. For each group, there is a presentation of the background information about the preparation provided by the programs. This is followed by an evaluation of the new graduate’s experiences in the workplace. Recommendations are provided for how to meet the needs of each type of nursing graduate and how to successfully bridge the gap between the academic setting and the work environment. This is a very good resource for any educator looking to create a residency program for new nurses in their environment.
