For the third edition of Essentials of Progressive Care Nursing, Dr Burns returns as editor. The book provides updated information on subjects relevant to progressive care nursing practice. This edition is based on the most recent study of practice conducted by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN). This means that nurses from around the country who work in diverse progressive care units validated the patient populations and disease processes that are managed on their units. Those validated topics serve as the content for this book.

The organization of the book remains logical. Section I, The Essentials, addresses content that is relevant to any and all of the disease processes later described. Included in this section is a chapter on ethical and legal considerations, with clear definitions of the ethical principles encountered in health care and examples of ethical quagmires experienced by nurses working in a progressive care unit.
