This book, as part of the Fast Facts series, is not meant to be an in-depth study of cardiac surgery or all patient care problems. However, it does provide a quick overview of information needed to care for this patient population. The book is divided into 5 parts: preoperative, intraoperative, initial postoperative, and extended postoperative periods, and long-term recovery. The preoperative period focuses on assessment and diagnosis. The intraoperative period describes the different types of cardiac surgeries, including off pump and minimally invasive procedures. The initial postoperative period covers patient care to the point of transition to intermediate care, and the extended postoperative period includes complications that may occur. Long-term recovery takes the patient through discharge and cardiac rehabilitation.
