Evidence is mounting that family presence during resuscitation and invasive procedures is beneficial to and desired by patients and their families. Meeting psychosocial needs in a time of crisis exemplifies care driven by the needs of patients and their families. Integrating family members during highly stressful situations such as resuscitation and invasive procedures can be problematic for members of the interprofessional team. However, as advocates for patients and families, nurses can be instrumental in helping to introduce this concept and practice on their unit.

Implementation of family presence during resuscitation and invasive procedures is a team effort. An interprofessional task force (including chaplains, social workers, and family presence facilitators) can get these practices done as a team. Especially important to this process is the designated family presence facilitator. This role maintains communication with and support for the family while the team members are providing care.
