This book is a moving and inspiring collection of first-hand stories from frontline nurses. We all start by learning to survive, but eventually thrive and grow stronger and more capable than we ever thought we could. These stories share that journey from surviving to thriving. The stories are varied in their settings, perspectives, and levels of expertise. One example is the wonderful story about a nurse as patient, who overcame the effects of post-traumatic stress after a car accident. Another story is about a nurse, trained in the United States with our wealth of resources, who learned to provide care within the confines of an austere environment. These stories reveal not only the empathy and grace shown in holding the hand of a dying patient, but the technical expertise, knowledge, and strength required for the profession of nursing—one of the “most challenging and underappreciated jobs in the world.”
