This document replaces the previous AACN Scope and Standards for Acute and Critical Care Nursing Practice. A task force, composed of 9 practicing progressive and critical care nurses, 1 AACN board member, and 1 representative from the American Nurses Association, met to review and recommend changes to the previous document. The main changes to the document are the name and updates to the Professional Trends and Issues section. Other changes include an expanded discussion of the ethical requirement for self-care, the need for adequate stafÿng, and improving the health of the work environment by addressing health care worker safety, as well as vignettes that provide real-life examples of how the standards of professional performance can be adopted in practice.
