My colleague and I approach recertification in different ways. He has taken the CCRN examination faithfully every 3 years for 14 years and will be doing it again this spring. He keeps his clinical knowledge current by studying for the examination. For me, on the other hand, taking the examination once was enough. I prefer to update my clinical knowledge through continuing professional development instead.
After initial certification, the learning does not end. There is pride associated with having credentials after your name, and most nurses do not want to give up certification once they have achieved it.
